Little Women in Mixed Media

April 2016

Artist Kirsten Biven has generated a series of 8 mixed media art pieces from collaborative processes during winery psalms workshops for the interdisciplinary artwork, 1868 Alcott Chenin Blanc. Each of the finished pieces are 35cm X 25cm (unmounted) and hold a value of $350.00 each when mounted. Developed from drawings of dancers Katie Chown, Jacqui Otago and Esther Scott during rehearsals with choreographer Frances Barbe, composer Anna-Kat Hicks as well as artist Kirsten Biven, each work offers a glimpse of a creative process in an artistic product.

The provocation for the 1868 Alcott Chenin Blanc artistic work was a quote from the novel Little Women by Louisa May Alcott: “I’m not afraid but it seems as if I should be homesick for you even in heaven” (1868). The artists’ response to this provocation was an invitation to the viewer to respond: Taste the unashamedly nostalgic flavour of sweet sorrow etched into the threads of time. Joyful notes of spring and roses burst through smoky reminiscence to delicately weave a waltz of memories.
