DEVELOPMENT: THE BIRTH AND DEATH OF FEATHERED THINGS

'The birth and death of feathered things' is the working title for a new contemporary dance that seeks to excavate themes of hope and reconciliation. Three established dancers will work collaboratively with two emerging dance artists to explore the use of space and time in the music of Olivier Messiaen's piece, 'The Quartet for the End of Time'. The music employs disruption of rhythm and use of birdsong to explore notions of hope: a pertinent theme for contemporary Australia today.

SHARING: ‘WINERY PSALMS’

In response to a fragment of text and aroma of wine, six 10-minute contemporary dance theatre pieces engage with others through the collaborative work of visual artists, composers, choreographers and dancers. Audience members are invited to experience viscerally sensory connection through visual, aural and kinaesthetic (wine tasting and responding to site-specific installations) mediums, through a promenade theatre experience on site at a selected winery.

The project involves the public presentation of the artistic work, winery psalms- the mixed half dozen, on site at local wineries. In 2015, Remnant Dance invited 22 collaborating artists to respond to a fragment of literary or philosophical text to create six short dance theatre pieces: the winery psalms. The devising process fostered experimental creative practices and extended artistic boundaries through interdisciplinary collaborations involving artists from the fields of dance, music and the visual arts. The visual art component is designed to be installed in the winery site, with the six interdisciplinary performances guiding audiences through each piece, experiencing art matched with wine-tasting. winery psalms originally premiered as a 90-minute performance exhibition, hosted by Fillaudeau’s restaurant and featuring Pinelli Estate wines in Western Australia, April, 2016. The performance experience invited audience engagement through wine-tasting (or its non-alcoholic alternative), inviting the delicate consumption of artwork through sight, sound, touch and taste. The pieces are described as ‘tasting notes’ after the style of wine-tasting notes in the programmes for performances.

In 2018, winery psalms-the mixed half-dozen, has been invited for a small performance tour during the Joint Dance Congress, Panpapanpalya, which is the 2nd joint congress of daCi (dance the Child international) and the World Dance Alliance Global Education and Training Network, to be held in Adelaide, South Australia, in July, 2018.
